The [livejournal.com profile] badmagic One-Liner Roundup, or Who Said That?
[livejournal.com profile] badmagic just posted to his journal a poll about recognizing quotations--a list of quotations asking "how many do you recognize," and a second list asking how many most people (in general) would recognize. Myself, I answered yes to most of them, even ones I couldn't get specifically with source and author, as long as I could recognize it/complete it if it was quoted at me/what have you.

Below the cut are identifiers for all of them.

"I yam what I yam." --Popeye the Sailor Man.
"Shrink the government small enough we can drown it in the bathtub." --Grover Norquist, of Americans for Tax Reform.
"You killed my father. Prepare to die." --Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride.
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." --Franklin Delano Roosevelt, from his first inaugural address.
"Duck season!" "Rabbit season!" --Bugs and Daffy (or vice versa), "Rabbit Fire," Looney Toons.
"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." --John F. Kennedy, at his inauguration.
"There can be only one!" --Highlander.
"I have a dream." --The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington.
"I am your father." --Darth Vader, in The Empire Strikes Back.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." --This guy named Joshua of Nazareth, according to this other guy who eventually got his head chopped off. (Erm, I mean, Jesus, from the Gospel of John.)
"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?" --The Brain, to Pinky.
"If you can't say anything nice about someone, come sit by me." --Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Teddy Roosevelt. (She was one of the grand dames of Washington DC in her day.)
"Call me Ishmael." --Opening words of Moby Dick.
"Truthiness." --Stephen Colbert, in the premiere of The Colbert Report, for a "truth" that a person knows from the cut without regard to silly details like facts. "Something that seems like truth, the truth we want to exist."
"What light through yonder window breaks?" --William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet.
"Leeeeroy Jenkins!" --Leeroy Jenkins, from a video about the idiot who ruined a complicated MMORPG tactical plan by charging full-throttle into combat. "Leeroy Jenkins" became the battle cry of the "just run at the enemy and start hacking away at whatever's closest" crowd.
"A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." --Oscar Wilde, is his play Lady Windermere's Fan.
"Reality-based community." --Originally said disparagingly by Karl Rove about the other side ("that's not how it works anymore," he continued), adopted by them for obvious reasons.
"A relationship is like a shark. It has to keep moving or it dies." --Woody Allen, Annie Hall.
"I have outlawed Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." --Ronald Reagan, not knowing his mic was live.
